Professional Thoroughbred Services In Co. Limerick
At Keelan Dempsey Racing and Green Acres Stud, we provide a comprehensive range of services for thoroughbreds at every stage of their development and career.
From breaking and pre-training young horses through to Flat and National Hunt racehorse training, sales preparation, foaling, rehabilitation and bloodstock assistance, each horse is managed as an individual.
Our approach combines international racing and bloodstock experience with hands-on care, individual attention and direct communication with owners and breeders.
We welcome enquiries from owners, breeders, studs and bloodstock professionals throughout Ireland.
Training (Both Flat and NH)
Keelan Dempsey Racing provides full training for both Flat and National Hunt racehorses, with every horse managed according to its individual ability, temperament, experience and stage of development.
There is no fixed system applied to every horse. Training programmes are adapted around the individual, with close attention paid to fitness, soundness, recovery, behaviour, appetite and overall wellbeing. This allows Keelan to adjust each horse’s workload as it progresses and to prepare it in the way that best suits its needs.
As a smaller, hands-on operation, Keelan remains directly involved in the day-to-day training and management of every horse in the yard.
This allows programmes to be adjusted quickly when needed and gives Keelan a clear understanding of how each horse is coping with its work.
Owners receive regular, straightforward communication regarding their horse’s progress, training programme and future racing plans.
Our aim is simple: prepare each horse properly, place it realistically and give it every opportunity to perform to the best of its ability.
Flat Racing
Flat horses are prepared with an emphasis on fitness, speed, race sharpness and efficient movement, while maintaining the physical and mental wellbeing of the horse throughout its campaign.
Starting-stall education and schooling can form part of the programme where required, alongside careful race planning to place each horse in suitable opportunities based on its ability, experience and progression.
National Hunt Racing
National Hunt horses are prepared with a focus on stamina, strength, balance and confidence, with progressive schooling over hurdles and fences where appropriate.
Jumping education is introduced and developed according to the individual horse, with the aim of producing a horse that is confident, economical and comfortable in its work.
Sales Preparation
We provide professional sales preparation for weanlings, yearlings, store horses and horses in training, with each horse prepared according to its age, condition and the requirements of the individual sale.
Our programmes focus on presenting horses at their best through careful attention to fitness, condition, handling, education, turnout and overall presentation.
Keelan’s background in bloodstock, including purchasing, pinhooking and racing thoroughbreds in Australia, provides a practical understanding of what buyers look for and the importance of producing a horse that presents well both physically and mentally.
Young Stock
Weanlings, yearlings and store horses are handled and prepared progressively, with particular attention paid to manners, confidence, walking, presentation and condition ahead of the sales.
Horses in Training
Horses being prepared for Horses in Training sales can be managed with a programme designed to have them fit, healthy and presented professionally when they enter the sales ring.
Our aim is to give every horse the best possible opportunity to make a strong impression and achieve its value on sale day.
Breaking and Pre-Training
A horse’s early education can have a lasting influence on its future career. Our breaking and pre-training programmes are built around patience, consistency and individual progression, with each horse given the time it needs to develop confidence and understand what is being asked of it.
Breaking
Our breaking programme introduces young horses progressively to handling, tack and being ridden, with an emphasis on developing trust, confidence and good habits from the beginning.
Each horse is treated as an individual, with the process adapted to its temperament, maturity and previous experience.
The aim is to produce a horse that is confident, willing and well educated under saddle, giving it the strongest possible foundation for the next stage of its career.
Pre - Training
Once established under saddle, horses can progress into pre-training, where their workload is gradually increased to develop fitness, strength, balance and confidence before entering full race training.
Programmes are tailored to the individual horse and can be adapted to meet the requirements of its owner or trainer.
Our aim is to send horses forward from pre-training fit, well educated and mentally prepared for the demands of a racing yard.
Starting Stalls & Schooling
We provide starting-stall education and schooling for young or inexperienced horses, as well as additional practice for horses that may benefit from greater confidence before racing.
Starting Stalls
Horses are introduced to the stalls progressively, with the emphasis on keeping the experience calm, straightforward and positive.
Each horse is given the time it needs to become comfortable entering, standing and leaving the stalls correctly, helping to build confidence and reduce unnecessary stress.
National Hunt Schooling
For National Hunt horses, schooling can be incorporated as part of their preparation, with work over hurdles and fences introduced and developed according to the individual horse’s experience and ability.
The focus is on producing horses that are confident, balanced and economical in their jumping, while allowing them to progress at a pace that suits them.
Whether a horse requires initial education, additional practice or a confidence-building session, schooling can be tailored to its individual requirements.
Bloodstock & Horse Selection
Keelan has extensive practical experience in the purchase, pinhooking, racing and sale of thoroughbreds, developed through his time working in Ireland, the United States and Australia.
While in Australia, Keelan helped establish Ormonde Bloodstock, where he was directly involved in identifying and purchasing young thoroughbreds, pinhooking horses for resale and racing horses in his own interests.
Among the horses personally purchased and raced by Keelan were Fake Love and Galaxy Keeper. Fake Love developed into a high-class two-year-old and Listed winner, while Galaxy Keeper became a multiple winner in Australia.
Keelan’s bloodstock experience also includes selecting and purchasing horses that went on to achieve significant success after being sold. One of the strongest examples is Happy Fat Cat, who developed into a highly successful performer in Hong Kong, winning nine races and more than €1 million in prize money.
These experiences have helped develop Keelan’s eye for the qualities that can make a successful racehorse, including conformation, athleticism, pedigree, temperament, value and suitability for the intended racing programme.
Horse Selection
We can assist owners looking to purchase horses either privately or at public auction, whether searching for a young prospect, a horse in training or an opportunity within a particular budget.
Each potential purchase is considered in the context of the owner’s objectives, with attention paid to the horse’s physical attributes, pedigree, racing potential and overall value.
Bloodstock Advice
Advice can also be provided on potential purchases, resale opportunities and the suitability of horses for particular racing or commercial objectives.
Our aim is to use Keelan’s practical experience of buying, racing and selling thoroughbreds to help owners make informed decisions and identify horses offering the right balance of ability, suitability and value.
Equine Massage Therapy
Keelan is fully qualified in equine massage therapies, allowing us to offer an additional service focused on muscular health, recovery and the overall physical wellbeing of the horse.
Massage therapy can be used as part of a horse’s wider management programme to help maintain muscle condition, flexibility, comfort and recovery from exercise.
Horses in Training
For racehorses and other performance horses, massage can be incorporated alongside the horse’s normal training and veterinary care, with particular attention paid to areas of muscular tension, stiffness and recovery following work.
Outside Horses
Equine massage treatments are also available for horses outside Keelan Dempsey Racing, including racehorses, sport horses and horses returning to work following a period of rest.
Each horse is assessed individually, with treatment tailored to its workload, physical condition and requirements.
